    Childish Gambino, “Eat Your Vegetables”

Ridiculous flow not centered around punchlines, a beat that samples Donkey Kong Country and isn’t the faux-orchestral style of his previous work, and a bunch of Atlanta shout-outs early on. Gambino comes back big.

  2. i think i’m a little too into childish gambino right now.

    Funny you should say that:

  3. I’ve been checking Pitchfork recently to see if they would actually get to reviewing Childish Gambino. They did! And it’s quite a review.

Stream Childish Gambino’s “Camp” on NPR

    iamdonald:

You can listen to all of Camp HERE on npr.

Came here to post the link, but looks like the most recent post on my dashboard is the same post from the man himself. Check out Camp, cause I’m streamin’ it hard right now.

  5. A little bit of the making of Childish Gambino’s next album Camp. This is the sort of life I want to lead, just pushing on and on with work ethic and creative force. Gotta keep practicing.

I hope he leaves the 400 Blows line in.

  6. Never has stuff been so exciting!

  7. Childish Gambino — EP

    New Childish Gambino EP.

Hey! More music from Donald Glover! Here’s proof that Gambino is firmly planted in the “live instrumental” production style, where every track here could be performed on stage with a full band. While I’m not sure how I feel about the beats, his wordplay is still top notch. my swag Jehovah Witness dude/ it never takes a holiday/ from “Be Alone” has already implanted itself in my mind after one listen, and nearly every other line has him twisting the English language into subjugation. He’s still only concerned with himself, but… It’s fun, so how much more can I ask for?

    Childish Gambino BLOWIN UP!

  8. Childish Gambino, “Freaks and Geeks”

At first I was unimpressed by this just-released video; Donald Glover obviously has a ridiculous amount of creativity inside him that he can’t help but dribble out of every pore, and so to just film him runnin’ around in a warehouse didn’t make that evident. Then about halfway through, his dancing got a little bit more frantic, the panning got near enough for me to see his facial expressions and his earnestness, and it finally ended on just his face. I felt uncomfortable making eye contact with him after the emotional vomit that is this rap. And when it comes to music videos, I’d much rather be uncomfortable than entertained.

Adele, “Rolling In The Deep (The xx remix feat. Childish Gambino)”

Welcome to the Donald Glover Appreciation Blog. I jest, but at the same time: do I? I’ll let you ponder that while we bump this track again. He doesn’t show up until about 2/3rds of the way through, but it’s not a struggle to get there; the remix is so simple and so fierce at the same time. The insistent handclaps make this song into a vicious schoolyard chant, demonizing Adele’s ex-lover. (Speaking of demons, gotta love that downward shift in pitch.)

When Gambino bursts onto the scene with a whirlwind of a verse, it’s the proverbial cherry on top. “Swag!” is all he can get out before tumbling down the most heated rhymes I’ve heard him spit thus far. If that wasn’t enough, we get to hear him move from pleading for his love to return like “hipsters to Blogspot,” to implying she has a fake ass, to finally letting her know she can call him if she regrets messing up the best man to ever happen to her. This is the sorta narrative I like best from CG, and the future is bright!

i’m sayin that my life is swell, cortisone/ fuck Macauley Culkin, never goin home alone

  10. Album Review

    Cul-de-Sac by Childish Gambino

If you’ve ever watched “30 Rock,” you may remember that the perpetually delusional Tracy Jordan is committed to becoming one of the few “EGOTs” in the world— that is, an individual who has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Childish Gambino, whose Cul-de-Sac was released in July, seems to be gunning for the same goal: he acts on a critically-acclaimed TV series (Community) as Donald Glover, produces his own dance music under the moniker MCDJ, and, as wordplay-loving rapper Childish Gambino, three LPs to his name. The EGOT is an appropriate finish line for Gambino, given that he may have even been the one to come up with the concept during his time writing for “30 Rock.”

Childish Gambino, “Let Me Dope You”

With what feels a little like the spiritual successor to “New Prince (Crown On The Ground)” from his first mixtape, Cheezy returns in fine form on this song and others from his new & first EP, Culdesac. The guitars whine incessantly, making you grit your teeth before Gambino has even started rapping.

As I said on my link to the album down there, Gambino can really separate himself from the pack on the tracks where he tells stories, but he also knows how to create bangers like this one. Less about the material world and less about his struggles as a young man, the content here is full on swagger-booster. Get pumped up.

ay player what’s good/ lemme dope ya/ ay hater what’s hood/ lemme dope ya

  13. This album is huge and available for free download. Special attention to “Different,” “Let Me Dope You,” and pretty much everything else. Fantastic and nerdy, maybe for the next album we can get back to the mini-storytelling heard on the mixtapes. <333
