Sleigh Bells, “Crown on the Ground” live at Terminal 5 — 2/17/12
Yesterday I read Matthew Perpetua’s outline of what is colloquially known as “the drop” in dubstep. He frames it within a Skrillex concert, and writes that it’s “as if [Skrillex is] reaching out and physically touching and pushing the crowd, enforcing the communal experience with a rattling sound that everyone feels at once,” a sound so universally loved that drops may become a “ubiquitous feature of pop music in the next few years.”
All attendees in this video are familiar with “Crown on the Ground,” but one of Sleigh Bells’ live show peculiarities is finishing it with a fake-out. Alexis coos the last “set set that crown” and the guitar finally dies out just like the recorded version, but then (at 3:43 in the video) they launch into one last reprise of the chorus’ detonation before actually ending both the song and the show. The audience knew it was the closer, so we spurred our ragged bodies to the limit. At this point in the concert, I was out of breath from how tight my stomach muscles constricted to push out all of my sing-along yells. I felt so close to the finish line, only to have the rug less-than-yanked-more-like-spontaneously-combusted out from under me.
Everyone there picked up on the sleight of hand at the same time and rallied for just a couple more measures. So much of the dubstep drop is based on expectation and build-up. Sleigh Bells introduced a jolt to the system, caffeine implants behind the eyes, lightning from within a vacuum.
Heard you say suicide in your sleep
Just get on with it you were born to lose
Will you hang like the moon from a rope in your room
Oh you long for it, you were born to lose

“Born to Lose” by Sleigh Bells.
Even though I read it as bitterly sarcastic, it still feels positively devilish to bump a song that encourages suicide. Take that, Good Charlotte!
As the herald of all things Sleigh Bells, here’s the newest track from the album. Let it lift you off the ringside of life, pick you up from the post-tackle Astroturf of being, or kick you right in your adrenaline sac as you sit in the penalty box of humanity. This is your time to shine, and Alexis is gonna sing you to victory with her most present vocals yet.
I’m seeing Diplo for free tonight! Sleigh Bells has a new song out! It’s like as soon as this apartment starts winding down, everything is going right! Thanks confirmation bias!
These guys are masters of turning something loud and violent into a loving and caring feeling. Alexis sounds like a mom reassuring her child, and Derek just Godzilla stomps all over the house containing them.
I’ve heard Sleigh Bells play this twice and both times assumed it was from an upcoming album. Instead it’s from their demo, 2HELLWU. Boy is there egg on my face. But then the egg gets blown right off by the fact that this song is fantastic and I don’t have to wait for an upcoming album to hear it again. Cheerleading singalongs and faltering huge guitar are at their best here. It kills even more live.
Sleigh Bells released official lyrics in their vinyl!
This is like the Rosetta Stone of me singing at concerts
drummer boy heaven’s deaf drummer boy heavy metal band sing with me deep sleep we can march to the beat heavy metal band deal with me drummer boy put the move on beat let the other ones sing with me deep sleep put the head on the street let the enemy sing with me
Diplo comes through with a mashup of Sleigh Bells, Swedish House Mafia, and Nicki Minaj, all at the same time. If there’s a 3-6 Mafia track buried somewhere in this treasure trove, I don’t have a 3-6 Mafia Detector strong enough to find it.
Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells at Coachella. It looks like fun to feel as good as she does. Reading Coachella recaps makes me feel a little misty-eyed because people just love music so much! So much!
I’m beginning to realize that this band loves high school and nostalgia, this song especially. Now I want to see how their other songs fit into that theme, but in the meantime: enjoy the premiere of this eerily shot and perfectly tense video.
